Sarkar Movie Review

✅ Fact Checked

Sarkar is a political drama film starring Vijay and Keerthy Suresh in lead roles. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar played a crucial role. Sun Pictures produced the film while AR Murugadoss has written and directed it. Sarkar was released worldwide on 6th Nov 2018.

Sarkar Story

Sundar Ramaswamy (Vijay) is an NRI and a world-renowned businessman popular for crushing his rivals to grow his business. He travels to India in a private flight with bodyguards to cast his vote. Surprisingly, someone else illegally casts his vote and Sundar decides to fight for his constitutional right. This eventually leads him into a fight with the ruling party. He sends off his bodyguards and takes things into his own hands. The tug of war between a corporate mastermind, Sundar, and the powerful politicians forms the crux of the story.

Story Analysis

The story of Sarkar is wafer-thin and there is limited scope to develop it. The entire theme of the film has been showcased in the trailer itself. However, the screenplay is gripping with multiple elements scattered throughout the film.

The film starts with a serious mood and maintains it throughout the film with a few comedy scenes here and there. AR Murugadoss is popular since the beginning of his career for etching good female lead characters but Sarkar is an exception. Keerthy Suresh is barely noticeable in the majority of the film. However, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar has a brief role that is dynamic. The first half of the film unfolds a series of incidents that lead Vijay into a political rivalry with the ruling party. The interval episode is a regular mass sequence but works out for fans and the mass audiences.

The second half has more social message and drama than the first half. The entertainment weakens as the film gets more serious. The mind game between Vijay and Varalaxmi is predictable and extremely casual. As there are many elevation episodes in the first half praising Vijay as a mastermind, a lot more is expected from the second half. The film funnels down into a simple drama towards the climax. The twists and turns in the climax are uninteresting. However, there are several emotional scenes in the second half. Overall, the script of Sarkar underplays several crucial scenes.

Performances

Vijay is at his best as a corporate criminal. There is a complete makeover in his appearance and body language. However, some scenes show his trademarks from previous films. Keerthy Suresh has a forgettable role. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar has a terrific screen presence and during some scenes, she is on par with Vijay with her subtle acting.

Technical Analysis

The script could have been better but the dialogues are good. The production values by Sun Pictures are top-notch. The cinematography is good with rich visuals. The background score doesn’t elevate some scenes. However, the theme music is good. The editing is top-notch bringing flow into the film. The fights and songs are evenly placed in the film. The dubbing work is top-notch and the film is almost like a straight film. AR Murugadoss has done a good job with the direction. But he could have taken care of the script and songs as there is much scope to improve.

Conclusion

Sarkar is a regular commercial film with a strong social message. The film is a treat to Vijay fans but not all regular audiences connect to the film. The lack of comedy may disappoint some mass audiences. Overall, Sarkar is a commercial flick that may perform well at the box office.
