Sanju Story Analysis
The director, Rajkumar Hirani, establishes his intentions at the very beginning of the film. The film starts with Sanjay Dutt (Ranbir Kapoor) looking for a writer for his biography while preparing to surrender in the Supreme court regarding the Arms Act case. As a film writer fails miserably trying to glorify his life, Sanju prefers an established writer Vinnie Diaz (Anushka Sharma). The recollection of incidents from Sanjay Dutt’s life gives an insight into his life. The first half is extremely gripping and establishes the characters.
The second half mostly deals with his strained relationship with his father and the court cases. However, the film narrates both the stardom and struggle of Sanjay Dutt. The drugs and alcohol addiction, losing his mother Nargis to cancer, illicit relationships, criminal record, and controversies – everything finds a place in the film. At several stages in the film, it feels like the personal life of Sanjay Dutt has influenced the Munnabhai series to some extent. There are many similarities between the characterizations. Moreover, the film doesn’t discuss much the past relationships and marriages of Sanjay Dutt. Raj Kumar Hirani might have done it intentionally to avoid controversies. The relationship between Sanjay Dutt and his father, Sunil Dutt (Paresh Rawal), is an important aspect of the story.
Sanju Performances
Ranbir Kapoor has delivered his best performance. He doesn’t seem to be imitating Sanjay Dutt but rather relived his life. Moreover, the body language and attitude of Sanjay Dutt are recreated in the film. With the swag and voice modulation, we feel like watching Sanjay Dutt himself on screen. Vicky Kaushal has given one of the finest performances of the film. He is impressive in serious as well as funny scenes. Additionally, Manisha Koirala has a brief role as Nargis Dutt (Sanjay Dutt’s mother). Paresh Rawal is flawless as Sunil Dutt. Dia Mirza played a key role as Sanjay Dutt’s wife, Maanyata.
Sanju Technical Aspects
The background score, as well as visuals, are top-notch. Rajkumar Hirani impresses with his signature style taking and execution. The humorous and emotional scenes are good. The screenplay is consistent throughout the film with nothing appearing out of place.
Overall, Sanju is an emotional roller-coaster ride with Rajkumar Hirani mark execution.
