✅ Fact Checked

CoCo Kokila is the dubbed version of the Tamil black comedy film Kolamavu Kokila starring Nayanthara in the lead role. Yogi Babu, Saranya Ponvannan, and Jacqueline played key roles. It was produced by Allirajah Subaskaran under Lyca Productions and directed by Nelson Dilip Kumar. The film was released worldwide on 31st Aug 2018.

CoCo Kokila Story

Kokila (Nayanthara) hails from a poor family in financial crisis and needs money for her ailing mother. She approaches a drug dealer in search of money and learns that this business is her best shot to earn decent money in a short time. She eventually gets trapped in a drug cartel’s gang war which poses threat to her entire family. How she faces the problems and gets out of them forms the crux of the story.

Story Analysis

The entire film revolves around Kokila and her financial problems. The first half is good and the drug cartel is portrayed with authenticity. The narration is uneven and runs at a slow pace once in a while. The non-linear plot could be confusing at times and take away the intensity. The melodrama in the second half of the film, some confusing elements, Tamil nativity, some comedy scenes which didn’t work, and lack of continuity in thriller elements, etc are a disappointment.

Performances

The entire film is carried over the shoulders of Nayanthara. The film offers a challenging role with complex emotions and a dark tone, and she gives an incredible performance with her subtle acting. Yogi Babu, Mottai Rajendran, and Saranya give settled performances.

Technical Analysis

The script has a lot of flaws and loose ends, otherwise, it’s an incredible story. The film was made on a low budget, set in a slum area with limited key characters. The production values are decent. Anirudh Ravichander is the unsung hero of the film with his phenomenal background score and incredible song. The cinematography is good and maintains the dark tone of the film. The direction is good.

Conclusion

CoCo Kokila is an unconventional dark comedy with good acting. Except for the Tamil nativity, the film is entertaining.
