Amar Akbar Anthony Story
Amar (Ravi Teja) and Aishwarya (Ileana) are close friends. Their parents are family friends as well as business partners. They want Amar and Aishwarya to get married to each other when they grow up. However, their trusted employees kill them in a bomb blast for company ownership. After a series of incidents, Amar ends up in jail and gets released after 14 years. He takes revenge on everyone responsible for the death of his parents as a return gift.
Story Analysis
Amar Akbar Anthony has one of the worst scripts of the decade. Moreover, there is no character development. Every element like family drama, action, revenge, etc. is forced into the story. The script has no substance. They took bits and pieces of Hollywood films and stitched them together in the worst possible way. The film has 2 parallel main tracks and an additional comedy track is forced into it.
The basic premise of the film is no different from films like ‘Athanokkade’. But the unimaginative script tests the patience of the audience. The villains stay together for the whole movie and just wait for their turn to die. The ridiculous FBI officer role is illogical. Overall, Amar Akbar Anthony is the worst out-of-the-mill script we could expect from Tollywood.
Performances
Ravi Teja effortlessly fits into the 3 characters but the characters are not at all developed. A casual-looking Amar, a serious Akbar, and composed Anthony stereotypes are 3 different characters in the film. Ileana has no scope of acting and she just walks here and there to mark her presence. The climax is the only opportunity for her to perform for a couple of minutes and she is good. Subhalekha Sudhakar has a short role and he is good in it.
The comedians have no scope or individuality. Vennela Kishore and Sunil have some good dialogues and all others fill the screen. Satya is good in his role but his role fails to meet the expectations.
Technical Analysis
Amar Akbar Anthony has a terrible script. The dialogues are decent. The production values are top-notch. However, there is no need to shoot the film in the USA. The songs are disappointing but the background score is decent. The cinematography is good and the VFX is average. The editing is terrible and there are many repetitions in the film. The direction is a total disaster. No sane man would use low-angle shots for comedians during a comedy scene and Srinu Vaitla is an exception. He would either become a low-budget filmmaker or fade out in the upcoming years.
Conclusion
Amar Akbar Anthony is a regular revenge drama with a terrible script and loopholes as big as a 70mm screen. A few comedy scenes are good but the rest of the movie is terrible. Overall, it’s one of the most disappointing films of 2018.
