Pantham is an action film starring Gopichand and Mehreen Pirzada in lead roles. It was produced by K. K. Radhamohan under the Sri Sathya Sai Arts banner and directed by debutante K. Chakravarthy Reddy. Pantham was released on 5th July 2018.
Pantham Story
Vikranth (Gopichand) is a vigilante who robs black money from politicians. Although Vikranth robs money from several people, it is the Home Minister Nayak (Sampath) he has been targeting. As Nayak enquires about the robberies, he learns that Vikranth is behind them. Why he targeted Nayak and what happens next form the crux of the film. The film raises many questions on the current state of politics, corruption, media, private hospitals, child labor, healthcare, etc as an integral part of the story.
Pantham Story Analysis
The story is not something we haven’t watched before. The plot structure is very much similar to that of Tagore. There are several scenes copied from multiple sources. For example, the train robbery is lifted directly from the series ‘Breaking Bad’. The comedy worked out very well in the first half but it has nothing to do with the story. The introduction of Gopichand doesn’t fit the narrative. The romance track and entire heroine character have no scope in the film and the chemistry between the lead pair didn’t work out. The interval block is good but is not gripping. The film slows down in the second half as soon as the motive of Vikranth is revealed and it becomes predictable. The climax could have been better.
Pantham Performances
Gopichand carries the entire film on his shoulders. His performance during the courtroom scenes is impressive. Mehreen Pirzada is a namesake heroine like most Telugu movies. Her performance is good but her role is poorly scripted and appears to be forced into the story. Sampath is good as a corrupt politician. Srinivas Reddy and Prudhvi Raj are good in regular comical roles.
Pantham Technical Analysis
The production values by K. K. Radhamohan are impressive. The script work is bad and there is a lot of scopes to improve the story. The writers have penned the script around a few scenes and it is evident throughout the film. The dialogues written about the social issues are good but the regular commercial dialogues during fights are mediocre. The cinematography is decent. Editing and production design are good. Gopi Sundar’s music is the worst in recent times. The background music is annoying and it frequently changes between tracks during fight scenes. The songs are average and are intrusive into the story. The direction is weak and many scenes appear patchy. The basic things like blocking are not taken care of. The film could have been a little better if it was handled by some other director.
Conclusion
Pantham is a film that depends heavily on Gopichand. The contemporary social issues discussed in the film deserve appreciation. While the theme had a lot to offer, the film revolves around the regular commercial elements. Overall, Pantham is a predictable action movie with a good message.
